“Why have Republicans and Democrats moved so far apart on immigration? That’s the question that drove this video.
To build this storytelling, most of the materials the Opinion team had were archive videos of poor quality and photos. The challenge was to use mixed-media infographics to connect all these elements, bringing key moments of the immigration context into a timeline that could guide the audience through the initial question. The goal was to show how immigration discourse has changed over the years and the challenges it faces today.
An interesting aspect is that, as a Brazilian motion designer, it was hard to choose symbols that would resonate with an American audience. To ensure this, I consistently checked the style frames with Jonah Kessel, the deputy director of Opinion Video and producer of this piece, to make sure I was on the right path.
