This is a commercial for my fictional film, which is about live streaming.
The Covid-19 outbreak has fueled the rapid growth of China’s live-streaming industry.
The media constantly promotes this industry as one that makes dreams come true: anyone can create content and gain value using only their phone.
But, is this really the case? My research reveals that, beneath the veil of its prosperity, there are severe phenomena such as labor exploitation.
And among those online streamers, young women are the majority.
This reminds me of female assembly line workers in the 1980s.
Therefore, in this project, an analogy between live streaming and production lines was drawn, connecting the female live streamers today with the women factory workers in the past.
I hope that by demonstrating this paired idea, people will pay more attention to the exploitation of women’s labor as well as the long-term plight of women.
